The museum started collecting railway artefacts already in 1896. The collection now includes everything from large locomotives and railway buildings to buttons and railway tickets. Only a small portion of the collection is on display in the permanent exhibitions.

The collection of rolling stock comprises

• steam locomotives
• electric locomotives
• diesel locomotives
• tramcars
• loading vehicles
• road rail vehicles
• passenger cars
• goods wagons
• track-inspection vehicles
• construction vehicles

and other material designed to run on tracks. There is even an old Volvo lorry in the collection.
